Finally, Let’s Talk More About Ebikes

The overlooked ebike might be about to get its due as an adroit solution.

France will pay you to ditch a car and pick up an ebike. Colorado is considering tax credits for ebike buyers. California is about to embark on a statewide incentive program.

Could the underappreciated ebike be emerging as a multi-pronged solution? It’s more environmentally friendly than a gas-powered car. More affordable than an electric car.

In this episode of the Next City podcast, Executive Director Lucas Grindley talks with one advocate, Nicolas Collignon, who says ebikes are proven the most efficient way of delivering goods in cities. Collignon is the founder of Kale Collective and author of Next City op-ed titled, “Bikes, Not Self Driving Cars, Are The Technological Gateway To Urban Progress.”

And we meet the creator of an incentive program called Pedal Ahead that is helping low-income San Diegans to own their first ebike.

“They're usually construed as toys as a luxury,” says Pedal Ahead founder Ed Clancy, who is changing the narrative about ebikes. His program is the inspiration for one now expanding statewide. “We're looking at bicycles as tools and a resource to a solution.”
