This ebook includes stories about the movement for Indigenous land return and the transformative vision of Indigenous land stewardship in American cities.

The #LandBack movement, the push for the return of Indigenous sovereignty over traditional territories, continues.

There are over 184,000 posts on Instagram including #LandBack and 395 million total views on videos with the hashtag on TikTok. But these social numbers are just one sign of traction.

At the time of publication, the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust stewards at least five sites in California’s East Bay and the trust has a list of 12 recent land returns in the U.S. and more internationally.

The LandBack movement is pushing people to grapple centuries of colonization and repair the harms done to Indigenous communities by returning the land that was stolen from them. It’s asking us to unsubscribe from white supremacy and start respecting Indigenous rights. In addition to land stewardship, that looks like preserving languages and traditions, and ensuring food sovereignty, housing, and clean air and water.
