With every leftover thrown in the trash, Americans are trained that food waste doesn’t matter. But “food rescue” activists are trying to send help to those in need while changing our collective mindset.

In this episode of the podcast, Next City Executive Director Lucas Grindley talks with Next City’s Christian Betancourt about his reporting on how reducing food waste can help end food insecurity. We also meet Preetha Rajkumar, founder of No Lost Food, an organization rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing it to those in need.

“So it's a small choice that over time, if more people start doing it, that's where we see the systemic change,” said Rajkumar, who discusses the challenges of scaling the program in her city, El Paso, Texas, and offers advice for others looking to start similar initiatives in their own communities.

The story on which this episode is based was co-published with El Paso Matters as part of our joint Equitable Cities Reporting Fellowship For Borderland Narratives.
