For Next City’s senior economic justice correspondent Oscar Perry Abello has been covering alternative economic models and policies in American cities since he joined our team in 2016 as a reporting fellow. Abello has rapidly become a leading journalist covering urban economics with a focus on working solutions for building economic equity, especially among marginalized groups and communities of color.
Now, as part of a Solutions Journalism Network webinar, he’s sharing how he finds these stories. “Sitting at the intersection of economy and democracy, innovative and evidence-based community-led models for ownership, governance, and finance often go ignored or unnoticed by editorial agendas focused on one or the other,” the Solutions Journalism Network explains. “This webinar introduces the concept of economic democracy as a framework for understanding the growing number of community-based responses to rising inequality and concentration of wealth across the U.S. and explores strategies for sourcing and reporting on these stories from experienced solutions reporters at the nonprofit newsrooms Next City and Prism.”
Abello will be joined by Aria Jougin, a researcher, organizer, and strategist who networks throughout the country on economic democracy issues, and Ashton Lattimore, editor-in-chief of Prism.
Prism and Next City recently co-published a six-month reporting project on solutions for economic equity. The series highlighted the ways people of color are claiming and creating economic justice in cities across the U.S., whether through labor organizing, worker co-ops or food sovereignty initiatives, and centered low-income and marginalized communities and how they are working toward economic equity.
