Where The Employees Bought The Landscaping Business

Thanks to an innovative investment firm that helps employees buy the business where they work, the landscapers bought their landscaping company in El Paso, and the plumbers bought their plumbing company in Denver. 

In this episode of our podcast, Next City Executive Director Lucas Grindley talks with Senior Economic Justice Correspondent Oscar Perry Abello about his reporting on a private-equity practice that is being repurposed to transfer ownership to employees, instead of to Wall Street investors. 

We also meet Todd Leverette, a founding partner with Apis & Heritage Capital Partners. Leverette sees his firm as an intermediary that makes selling to your employees a “competitive option.”

“If you're going to scale this model and bring it to more people — people of color and the population as a whole — you can't be dependent upon altruistic sellers,” says Leverette.
